“Does he make you see stars?’ he asks in a low voice. ‘Does he call you his north star? Because that’s what you are to me. You’re the reason I made it home.”

Back of the book blurb:

In this heart-wrenching tale of love and loss, a young Marine and his best friend’s sister plunge into a forbidden love affair while he’s home on leave.
When a Marine Chaplain knocks on her door, Jessa’s heart breaks—someone she loves is dead. Killed in action, but is it Riley or Kit? Her brother or her boyfriend…
Three months earlier, Marine Kit Ryan finds himself back home on leave and dangerously drawn to his best friend Riley’s sister, Jessa—the one girl he can’t have. Exhausted from fighting his feelings, Kit finally gives in, and Jessa isn’t strong enough to resist diving headfirst into a passionate relationship.
But what was just supposed to be a summer romance develops into something far greater than either of them expected. Jessa’s finally found the man of her dreams and Kit’s finally discovered there’s someone he’d sacrifice everything for.
When it’s time for Kit to redeploy, neither one is ready to say goodbye. Jessa vows to wait for him and Kit promises to come home to her. No matter what.
But as Jessa stands waiting for the Marine Chaplain to break her heart, she can’t help but feel that Kit has broken his promise…
Riley or Kit? Kit or Riley? Her brother or her boyfriend? Who’s coming home to her?

My rating:

Okay, I know this was published back in December, (at least in the U.S.), but there was no way I could withhold how much I love this book. I absolutely loved Full Measures by Rebecca Yarros, which is also a military romance and when I saw that this was also a military romance I was already half in love.

I mean, even the premise has you hooked. Like you know you in for an emotional roller coaster when you realize the love interest might actually die at the end of the book. That’s even how the prologue starts. It starts with Jessa and Kit’s dad coming to the door to deliver devastating news. This isn’t a spoiler—it’s literally how the book starts.

And then as soon as the prologue is over it goes to Jessa’s eighteenth birthday party and that’s when you begin to fall for the beautiful man Kit Ryan is as well as the wonderful woman Jessa Kingsley is. Gray’s characters are truly one of a kind and I had the best time reading about them.

Jessa is such a fun character. I love the characters who start off with barely a voice and then by the end of the book, they are finally their own person. It’s such beautiful character development and Gray does it with such elegance and grace. It was truly beautiful to watch Jessa come into her own.

Kit Ryan is now up there on my book boyfriend list. I mean, god, that quote at the top just made me swoon so damn hard. There’s more to it, too, and ugh, it’s just amazing. I have a thing for a man in a uniform and you just know Kit fills his out so well. He was so sweet and charming and fuck, I think I fell as hard for him as Jessa did. And watching him go through so much pain near the end of the novel was heartbreaking. Get your tissues ready for this one!

I also have a thing for older brother’s best friend romances and this was such an exceptional love story. It was full of heart, passion, and a few very steamy scenes! It will make you laugh, cry, and feel all of the things. If you enjoy military romances you should definitely pick this up!

Happy Reading!
