KANDI STEINER GIVEAWAY + REVIEW: Something in the Way series by Jessica Hawkins

My world had been so dark before Lake. It worried me how far I’d go to keep that light in my life.

Back of the book blurb:

It was a hot summer day when I met him on the construction site next to my parents' house. Under the sweat and dirt, Manning Sutter was as handsome as the sun was bright. He was older, darker, experienced. I wore a smiley-face t-shirt and had never even been kissed. Yet we saw something in each other that would link us in ways that couldn't be broken...no matter how hard we tried.

I loved Manning before I knew the meaning of the word. I was too young, he said. I would wait. Through all the carefully-chosen words hiding what we knew to be true, through his struggle to keep me innocent, and through infinitely-starry nights--I would wait. But I'd learn that life isn't always fair. That no matter how much you achieve, none of it matters if you suffer the heartbreak that comes with falling for someone you can never have. Because even though I saw Manning first, that didn't matter. My older sister saw him next.

My rating (for all 3 books):

(A little note before we get started: the blurb up above is from book one, but I’m reviewing the entire first three books…)

Wow! I have SO MANY FEELINGS when it comes to the Something in the Way series by Jessica Hawkins. SO MANY FUCKING FEELINGS. I asked a bunch of people for very emotional and heartbreaking books and one of the books that kept coming up repeatedly was Something in the Way by Jessica Hawkins. I finally looked it up and the blurb sounded amazing and even better, it was part of a three (now four, which comes out in 2018) book series! And just by the blurb and the fact that it was three books, I knew I was in for some motherfucking angst. AND GUESS WHAT? I REALLY FUCKING WAS. THESE BOOKS DESTROYED MY LIFE.

“But I couldn’t shake the feeling that that even though I’d met Manning first, for some reason, Tiffany thought he belonged to her.”

Something in the Way starts with Lake, our sixteen-year-old protagonist, meeting Manning, a twenty-two-year-old construction worker who happens to be working on a lot close to her house. Don’t freak out!

Nothing sexual happens between Lake and Manning while she is underage.

Even though Lake can sense the connection between her and Manning, it seems like she won’t ever have the chance to pursue that because her 19-year-old sister, Tiffany, gets her claws into him first.

Let’s just say that if you love a good slow burn, you will absolutely adore this series. And boy do I mean slow burn. Jesus, it was insane, waiting for something… anything… to finally happen. But when it does, I promise it will be worth it.

“Someone else would be her first love. Some other man would be the first to cherish her. The first to ruin her. It couldn’t be me. It wasn’t so much the difference in our ages that scared me, but how much a person could change, could be changed, in only a couple years.”

Like I said—complete and utter angst. Your heart will break so many fucking times during this series, it’s honestly a wonder that I’m still sitting here, breathing, but in the words of Sia, “I’M STILL BREATHING!!! I’M AAALLLLIIIIVVVEEEE!” The chemistry is extremely intense between Lake and Manning, and to watch them circle around each other for as long as they do is literal torture. But it’s also the sweetest torture you’ll ever endure.

“My love for him spanned the ocean, the sky over our heads, an infinite universe of stars. I could do this to Tiffany, but I couldn’t do it to him. I sealed my words inside along with a great love that somehow fit inside me. Maybe one day, Manning and I would challenge fate, defy gravity, and move the stars ourselves. But today was not that day.”

The characters that Jessica Hawkins has created are raw and flawed, but they’re also vivid and eloquent and captivating. This series gave me one of the worst book hangovers I’ve ever had in my life and that’s because you spend so much time with the characters and this story, over the course of three books (and soon to be four, thank GOD), that your time with them becomes intense and so fucking real. My suspension of disbelief is very strong, but there’s a difference between reading a book and living the story, and this series definitely falls into the latter category. The emotions are heightened, the story is intense, and the characters are so real.

“The longer I was in her presence, the more certain I was I had only one option left—tilt the universe until she fell into my arms.”

Something in the Way is one of my favorite series that I’ve read in 2017. Please, please, please buy this one, put it on your wish list, recommend it to your friends. It will change their lives.
